Watercolours Watercolors unleash the breezy charm of summer, represent the fluidity of the ocean (or indeed torrents of rain) and the subdued and watered down pace of life that most of us benefit from during the summer months and sunny vacations. Watercolor ‘decorating’ is a trend, however, that is rapidly gaining popularity across the globe, one not to be dismissed and now is definitely the right time to use it in?your living space and interior schemes. If there’s a budding Turner or Picasso inside you just bursting to get out! – or indeed even if there isn’t and you have no painterly skills and inclinations at all – then here is the opportunity to break out the paintbrush and express yourself in the most personal but informal and ‘mistake-free’ way possible!
Some might look at the image above and think that this is a paint job gone wrong or unfinished, or just simply a mess? But I love it! - everything about it! – from the colour to the informality, rawness, patternation, artistry, aesthetics and the mixture of watery tones. As simple and uncomplicated as it ischildren's decorative pillows, this wall draws you in and takes you to wherever your imagination wants to go. You could be in a tropical lagoon, on a desert island, or scaling the heights of Mount Everest! But the uncomplicated and diluted wash that adorns this wall offers endless possibilities not only for the imagination but for decorating schemes too. ?The beauty of this painterly style for many home owners and novice interior designers alike is that it is totally forgiving and versatile as it does not aim for perfection, in fact quite the opposite! Drips, runs and irregularities only serve to make this style more authentic and endearing.
valentines day gifts for himIt is not just on walls that we will see this trend becoming popular though. Painterly homewares will come to the fore too in the form of wall art, canvases, cushions, tableware, glass and more. So if a wall full of watercolour is too much for you to process or to live with, then you could still add a touch of on-trend watercolour with your accessories and key pieces. Pretty pastels work well in watercolours, but daring principal and primary colours become less overpowering and fearful when used as a wash, in a diluted and less potent strength, so use the opportunity here to be a little more daring than usual with your colours, whether for your accessories or your walls. Watery hues are forgiving enough to use contrasting colours together in sturdy quantities or brushstrokes, without the fear of a brash or gaudy outcome or colour overload, so again, ?be a little adventurous and creative with your colour choices. The two images above demonstrate perfectly how well either contrasting colours or similar hues work well as watercolours and are a great source of inspiration for how to achieve the look easily and with little outlay. However, all that said, if you fancy the full-on watercolour decorating scheme but have neither the time, inclination, skills or motivation to achieve it, then all is not lost! How about ‘Watercolour Wallpapers’! ????? ?
These gorgeous examples are from Black Crow Studios and are simply stunning!
Founded in 2010 by designer and owner Tracey Hiner, this innovative company set out to go above and beyond traditional wallpaper! Damasks, toiles, been-there-before geometrics, stripes and florals move over! This company’s designs are unique and inspirational. The inspiration for these stunning wall coverings come from clients’ ideas or from artists’ works and are then skilfully translated to the wall as large scale digital prints – that actually look nothing like digital prints! The quality and ‘wrap-around’ continuation of these designs gives them the look of hand painted, unique, one-off’s!
The image above is a cameo taken from a full room shot, but just this section alone shows how fascinating and skilful these papers are. I could happily sit parked in front of this section of wall alone for hours, just looking. Looking at the colours, patteration and movement; and each time I took my eyes away and looked back, I would see something different, a shape or colour or form that I hadn’t seen before. These papers are truly enchanting and captivating not to mention stylish and aesthetic.
And here’s the design showcased in a full roomset designed by Wendy Schwartz Design.
Tracey Hiner says that people often go up to the walls, look closely and even touch them to firmly establish that their eyes are not deceiving them, as many are convinced that they are looking at actual paint on the walls.
This is probably due in part to the none-repetitive nature of the designs that makes them look like unique one-off’s. Even though the company’s product is digitally made they aim for it not to look so and achieve it easily with these stunning installations. And if you think these stunning pieces are only for huge mansions and large walls then think again. Black Crow make wall coverings for itty-bitty rooms in private homes to 200 feet plus installations in public places, including everything from museums to mansions and hotels, including a few (dare I contradict the uniqueness of this product and say) ‘off-the-peg’ designs available via the shop with us section of their website.
So whether your approach is going to be a DIY one where you splash some watercolour washes over your walls, a cautious one where you introduce the trend with a few accessories or whether you decide to go with ultimate designer chic with the latest technological and digital wallpapers; one thing is for sure – a bit of watercolour is warranted if you’re a savvy home owner who wants to keep abreast of interior trends!
. . . . .
Back in the days when showing your ankles was risqué and being seen canoodling with the opposite sex was a full blown ‘put them in the stocks and flog ‘um’, type scandal, Love Seats were a welcomed solution for courting couples (that’s people dating for the younger readers out there). They were able to sit close enough together to carry out a private conversation, have a bit of a flirt and possibly – if nobody was looking - a cheeky peck, but without actually sharing such a confined space they would end up ‘shock horror’ touching bodies, therefore making them acceptable.
